There’s so much wildlife within New York State for us to see. I love that our furry friends have made a return this spring. We can see chipmunks, squirrels, deer, possums and skunks. The birds fill the air with their happy songs and it's truly music to those who appreciate it.

When it comes to mammals within New York State, we can think of alot! The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation also shared that the beaver is listed under,

“Symbols of New York State”

If you have ever had the pleasure of seeing a beaver, you may know it for it’s buck teeth, fuzzy brown fur and flat tail!

Why New York State Chose The Beaver As Its Official State Animal


The State Symbols USA also recognized the beaver as the,

“Official State Animal Of New York”

They shared that the beaver was declared New York State’s official state in 1975. Oregon is also another state that identifies the beaver as their state animal which is fun! 

Beavers are not only a great part of history in New York but also helped shape the natural being of this state. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation stated that beavers are known for being,

“Nature’s finest wetland engineer”

They included that beavers can positively impact water such as streams by creating dams within New York State for increased water flow in areas. I love the idea that they help nature and other wildlife too!

It's fun to learn about animals and where they live within New York State. I have researched where opossums, skunks, raccoons and other animals sleep at night, haha. It’s fascinating to find out about their skills of what they can build or turn their woodland home into.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation highlighted that beavers can be mostly found within a wooded area in New York State, usually around streams.They also included lakes and ponds eating plants!
