
Ex-Police Officer From Orange County Sentenced After Fatal Crash
Punishment has been handed down to an ex-NYPD officer from Orange County who was driving the vehicle that crashed killing her 36-year-old husband on the Palisades Parkway in Rockland County, New York.
Back in February 2023, we told you about a "horrific" car crash that involved an off-duty New York City Police Department (NYPD) police officer and her husband which occurred at approximately 3 a.m., on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in the town of Haverstraw, NY.
NYPD Officer Involved in Fatal Car Crash
According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that a 2021 Hyundai was traveling northbound near exit 13, left the roadway, and crashed into a tree. The accident resulted in the death of 36-year-old Chevy Thomas from Maybrook, NY who was a passenger in the car. At the time police said the accident was under investigation and a short time later they announced that the driver was an off-duty NYPD police officer.

After the investigation was completed police said that 36-year-old Bernadine Thomas, an off-duty NYPD officer was speeding at more than 100 mph on the northbound side of the Palisades Parkway with her husband in the passenger seat when their car went off the road and struck a tree. Mr. Thomas was declared dead at the scene. Thomas was later dismissed from the NYPD and charged with criminally negligent homicide.
Former Officer Pleads Guilty
According to the New York Attorney General's Office, Thomas from Maybrook, Orange County, NY entered a guilty plea to criminally negligent homicide in a Rockland County Court on February 3rd, 2025. Thomas pleaded guilty and will remain out on bail until her sentencing on May 7, 2025. In exchange for her guilty plea, she will serve five years’ probation. Thomas has waived her right to appeal.
