Saugerties, NY Officer Seeks Public’s Help After Two Dogs Are Abandoned on Rainy Night

2 Dogs Dumped in Ulster County

On the evening of October 30th, 2025, Adam Saunders received a call about 2 dogs left abandoned on Livingston Street in the Village of Saugerties.

If you recall, the weather on October 30th was atrocious. Heavy rains, high winds and bitterly cold. Sadly, the 2 dogs were dumped out of a vehicle and left to fend for themselves.

Saunders is the Town of Saugerties as Dog Control Officer. He arrived on the scene around 7:30 pm and several people had seen the dogs wandering, since they have dark fur it made it more difficult to locate them.

That is until 1 wandered onto a porch in someone's backyard. Saunders was able to lasso her in.

Sadly, they weren't able to locate the other dog.

Dog Found in Appalling Condition in The Village of Saugerties

The dog they were able to save is now going by the name Hazel.

At the time of her rescue she was "unsteady on her feet, a bit thin, and she reeked of urine and feces, her fur brittle, even in the soaking rain."

The Town of Saugerties Animal Shelter took Hazel in and brought her to the vet where she was diagnosed with muscle atrophy. According to Saunders her condition "combined with the caked feces embedded throughout her fur, suggests a life spent in a cage with little to no efforts make to clean her area by her owners."

Saunders calls Hazels predicament "Appalling."

They're hoping to find any information regarding Hazels previous owners. Saunders asks for the public to come forward with any information writing:

Saunders updated those following along stating he has "viewed numerous inquiries as to Hazel's well-being, and many generous offers to give her the kind of home she deserves and has been long denied."

While he appreciates everyone who has reached out, he has directed everyone to the animal shelter for adoption inquiries or to help with financial support for Hazel.

As of the morning of November 3rd Hazel's companion is still missing, but trail cameras have been set up as well as strategically places food stations.

The area has also been searched by infrared drone. We'll keep you update with and information that becomes available.
