Many New Yorkers might be surprised to learn that there's another Statue of Liberty just a short drive from the state border... and it's hiding in one of the most unexpected places.

The most famous icon of New York State must be the Statue of Liberty. While the New York City skyline and Niagara Falls join Lady Liberty on our state license plates (which are hiding an interesting secret, by the way), the iconic statue in the New York harbor is in a league of her own. But what about her sister?

The Amazing Story Behind the Replica Statue of Liberty

For nearly 40 years, a replica of the Statue of Liberty has been watching over New York's neighbor to the west. Surprisingly, this creation wasn't installed in an official capacity, but rather in a covert nighttime mission by residents who were looking to create a local legend.

The impressive statue was the conceived by Gene Stilp, and was originally built in the middle of the Susquehanna River in Dauphin, Pennsylvania (below). When the first version was removed after several years due to damage, a permanent edition weighing four tons was built again in the late 1990s.

While the statue is visible from the nearby highway, a closer view by boat (or drone) shows exactly how impressive the statue really is. Although some residents argued that there was no additive value of the statue in an already-beautiful location, it has nonetheless become a local legend.
