I pose the question how did we do Halloween before the internet not because of the millions of DIY costume ideas you can grab from a quick Google search, Pinterest inspired couples garb, or step-by-step guides on how to throw the ultimate Halloween party.

I mean how did we do Halloween it in the quite literal sense, how did we survive trick-or-treating 'back in the day' without knowing which houses were participating in Halloween candy distribution thanks to an app or website?

There's An App For That

We rely on apps for just about everything these days, it has become a way of modern life. One of my most utilized ones is a free one called Nextdoor, a community based forum for locals in your area to share resources, news, recommendations. I get emails, usually once a day or so, with highlights and important information, but I use the app pretty frequently for recommendations.

When I had a leak and my ceiling almost caved in last month and needed a contractor, stat...Nextdoor.

When my daughter's pediatrician left the practice and the other doctors were not accepting new patients and she needed to be seen...Nextdoor.

Halloween 'Treat Maps' Hit The Hudson Valley

Instead of doing it 'old-school' style like my sister and I did growing up in Fishkill, aka, our parents telling us 'if they have an outdoor light on, knock on the door and said trick-or-treat,' there's now an app that will allow you to share if you're dishing out candy (or putting a 'just take one' sign with a bowl on your steps). So, for those who want to invite little ghosts, goblins and mini Taylor Swifts to their door, or those of us heading out with kiddos dolled up, you can actually use this interactive map to see which houses have pinned themself to the Halloween treat map.

By adding your home to the treat map, those in your neighborhood who are engaged on Nextdoor will be able to see that your house is a candy stop for tricks and or treats...you can even add a photo or description. Think we can sort by which houses are giving out full size candy bars, and who is giving out raisins....asking for a friend.
